Forgiving Game of Thrones: An Unpopular Opinion
Переглядів 13 тис.5 років тому
After a bit of a hiatus, I'm back and ready to lose some subscribers! Today I'm talking a little more about Game of Thrones, constructive vs destructive criticism, and the challenges that come with mainstream popularity and dedicated fandom. Remember people, understanding is better than anger :) Game of Thrones is property of HBO, based on a A Song of Ice and Fire, a novel by GRRM.
The Power of Stories: How Bran the Broken was always the ending
Переглядів 171 тис.5 років тому
Given the massive controversy and confusion around King Bran, and the ending of Game of Thrones, I figured I would give a brief explanation why Bran the Broken was always GRRM's endgame, what this means for the story, and what it says about fate, free will, justice, and the stories that bring people together. Game of Thrones is property of HBO Based on a novel A song of Ice and Fire by George R...
Tragic Idealism: Why we should pity Daenerys Targaryen
Переглядів 328 тис.5 років тому
In light of last week's war crime, many have names Daenerys to be the true villain of Game of Thrones. But today I'm going a bit of a more controversial route, and dubbing our Mad Queen to be the story's tragic hero. So let's look at her arc through the lenses of Shakespeare, Marxism, and Don Quixote, to determine why Daenerys Targaryen was always doomed. Please watch to the end before commenting.
Jaime Lannister: The Limits of a Redemption Arc
Переглядів 114 тис.5 років тому
Let's talk Redemption arcs. While many are confused and even angry about Jaime's tragic return to Cersei, I have to say this is one of the few Game of Thrones twists that D&D actually got right. Jaime Lannister's has always been not a straightforward redemption, but an exploration of the limits of the redemption arc. I hoped to finish this video before Jaime and Cersei bit the dust, but on the ...
Game of Thrones & The White Savior Complex
Переглядів 37 тис.5 років тому
Today's topic is a little more controversial. Today I'll be addressing Black victimhood, the White Savior narrative, the Black Best Friend trope, and how Game of Thrones generally struggles with representations of people of color. That said, I'll also be defending the show's decision to kill off Missandei, and making a short case for how it can lead to a bittersweet but poignant ending for Grey...
Why Theon should have killed the Night King
Переглядів 282 тис.5 років тому
From plot armor to bad lighting and from the thematic to the cinematic, there is a lot to pick apart about the Battle of Winterfell. But today I want to talk about the question of material vs conceptual victory, and explain why the person to defeat the Night King should have been not the badass Arya Stark, the heroic Jon Snow, or even the messianic Daenerys Targaryen, but Theon Greyjoy. Game of...
Why Bran Stark will be King
Переглядів 1,2 млн5 років тому
Today I'm hitting you all with one of my most controversial (and probably unlikely) predictions. At the end of Game of Thrones, the Starks will be the new royal family, and the official ruler of Westeros will be the Three Eyed Raven himself. King Brandon Stark. Not the King we expect, but the one we deserve. EDIT: Please check the upload date before commenting. Or, watch my season 8 predictions...
Magic Mirror: The True Purpose of the White Walkers
Переглядів 50 тис.5 років тому
In my first ever animation, Bran Stark floats through the cosmos and ponders what the White Walkers are really about, drawing heavily from the philosophy of G.W.F Hegel, and the cinematic style of Jordan Peele. As always, the television series Game of Thrones is property of HBO, based on the novels of A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin. For more on Hegel, check out Philosophy Tube's t...

Jon Snow vs. The World

Today I'm focusing on Jon Snow and the question of whether or not he will take the throne, as well as how his story serves as a commentary on the Rightful King Returns trope, the Reluctant Leader, and the Existential Hero. Stay tuned for more to come! Including videos on the Lannister siblings and Cleganebowl Game of Thrones is the property of HBO A Song of Ice and Fire is the property of Georg...
Totally disagree with you, but about the book. The movie characters are quite different, never so realistic and never so well written/motivated. And i do not understand why call it a redemption arc, there are things that cannot be redeemed, like pushing a 9 year old out of a window. That does not mean this same person cannot have also acts that are brave and goos and smart and etc... people are complex. Also people do change, they do abandon things they thought they could never abandon and they cannot be defined only with one simple relationship, so the move returning Jamie to Cerci the same as at the start is poor writing.
Ehhh, I feel like D&D killed Daenarys because men were uncomfortable with a popular independent female leader. It's obvious that male leadership is not natural and has to be indoctrinated into people in order for them to accept it, unlike female leadership which is natural from birth.
So this video was clearly made before season 8 episode 3……
This is THE best argument for Daenerys on UA-cam.
Excellent review! But there are many more angles to look at Daenerys' failure and the subsequent madness. One important piece is to see how the level of consciousness of the people surrounding her affects the outcome of her actions. Many of them are engulfed in their own desperate projections of needing a savior, which Daenerys filled in without understanding where it leads. In the case of a game at the continental level the stakes are extermely high and what the slaves and her supporters brought made as much of her downfall as she did. Similar story with Hitler, though Daenerys had a much better personality and could have achieved much better outcomes IF she understood the forces against which she was being played. Carl Jung, though not the greatest seer in this field, can shed much light on the forces in command of people like Hitler and other heroes.
Nah, once she hatched those Dragons she had to go.
Freeing the slaves was kind of important though.
bro what even is this response lol did you even watch the video in its entirety
5:15 that's fucking stupid . Ned made mistakes and stuck to his flawed idealogy . All that led him to his death . Each decision was consistent to his character .
Regardless of the idea by itself, it was still badly written within the trajectory of the show. I know this is just your opinion and the idea again by itself is not bad, it was just poorly executed and didn’t make a lick of sense during Season 8 after all the stuff he had done.
The answer is the whytes should've kept marching towards the south whether the Night King was killed or not in this battle. Even the visions of the Whytes during House of the Dragon had absolutely 0 impact or meaning because this entire storyline was SO inconsequential it did not warrant a multigenerational prophecy, a multi-king war over the throne, or anything really to resolve. It took Arya stabbing the Night King in the stomach. Okay. Lol.
Leftist politics tends to have a habit of reading WAY too much into things, this video is an example.
@@FloridaDude007 yea Game of Thrones is NOT POLITICAL!!!!
@yezenirl6331 There is literally no white savior complex in Game of Thrones, the only reason it looked like that in the show is because they filmed a scene in Morocco. Yes, leftist are always trying to find ways to be offended at things for some reason.
Subscribed! Really good analysis for me.
I refuse to believe that ending is martins vision he has something far more creative
Her white savior halo came with a skyscraper sized note "BEWARE THE HERO" since season 1.
I actually had the same thought But I think John should’ve become the night king and killed Daenerys’s conquering hoard. By ushering a new winter. Sparing the starks
5 years later and I’m still so blown away by how much better this would have been. It’s almost like a head-cannon to me, I can picture it perfectly, it all makes sense. The side character, turned traitor, who got tortured until he was a shell of himself, redeeming himself for the family he betrayed and ultimately being humanity’s savior. Beautiful and so much in line with what GoT set out to be. But no, it ended with a quick time event from a superhuman assassin.
I'm both impressed & not at all impressed by this. You are defending a morally evil & aesthetically reprehensible final season (though honestly season 7 is just as much garbage as season 8). It is true that toxic fandom backlash is something that happens. No one should serious discount that. However, you are most definitely not seriously engaging with people who have been concerned with evaluating GoT the TV show & how it differs from the books & how we need to evaluate the works differently AND how the turn against GoT the tv show by reviewers & general fans had already started with season 7. You conflate narrative, tone, world-structure, & thematic expectations together. I would agree that the Thinkstory alternative is bit a weak but it is somewhat grounded in the text of the tv show at least in terms of how the narrative had been proceeding (particularly in the wretched season 7). But to claim as you do that GoT has been punished for keeping to an artistic vision as you do is simply gross. I don't know if you have ever watched the animes Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) & Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009) but both of these anime are based upon the same manga but they end up adapting the work in very, very different ways. The reason behind this is that the manga was not complete when (2003) started and the (2003) anime finished before the mange was finished. It was only after the manga was complete that the (2009) anime began. In terms of narrative with respect to the beginning of the adaptations there's no correct answer as to which anime as superior--both animes have legitimate claims to be more loyal albeit in different ways, but with respect to both narrative & themes there is no question which adaptation is superior--it is (2009). However, in saying that (2009) is superior as an adaptation of the manga I am most definitely NOT saying that (2009) is the superior anime. Indeed, I personally prefer (2003) which is not only narratively radically different from (2009) but has numerous themes as well as an over all tone that are incompatible with the those of manga/(2009) anime. Likewise we have to judge GoT & its source material as different media. The aesthetic & moral failure of GoT is a failure as a tv show. By the time of season 6--a deeply flawed but still mostly solid/above water season unlike seasons 7 & 8--the differences between books & tv series were so massive that it is no longer fair to use the books as the key to understanding & appreciating let alone critiquing the tv series. I have absolutely zero respect for D&D for what they did with seasons 7 & 8 and this is because they DID NOT try. The claim that they did try is honestly laughable to me. D&D did so much non-book original work that was fantastic--Cersei & Robert's conversation in season 1, Tywin & Arya's scenes in season 2, Olenna & Tywin's scene in season 3, Tyrion & Daenery's scenes in season 5--& for them to produce seasons 7 & 8 which were so much at odds with the narrative, tone, & themes of the previous seasons is why they need to be damned for all time. Again, I appreciate you've tried to defend D&D... but I think you're fundamentally chosen to defend them against weak strawmen rather than against truly thoughtful critics.
Interesting to compare her with Rhaenyra now on HotD
But, if the Night King is killed by someone who makes thematic and emotionally-satisfying sense instead of an unrelated girl that the show has been struggling to keep relevant for years because the writers are fanboys, then the sky will fall! Cats and dogs living together!
Glad you're no longer uploading anything, mate.
My favorite character of the whole series even when she fell so awesome love when she went mad I'd stand by her still take over the world dany I always wanted her to win the game of thrones while she's alive game of thrones was awesome when they killed her off I could care less about what happened after that the show ended there for me so mad they did that I'd still be into her even if she was my aunt lol shed always be my queen lol
Well this was just fantastic! I remember getting to the end of the book A Game of Thrones in 1997 and thinking to myself, "o I love her (Dany) so much, but this is going to get Shakespearean or Greek in scope by the end." Thank you for making a video and voicing what I've been thinking for 27 (😳) years. 💜
Violent =\= mad. The whole video makes 0 sense because it did not understand this simple thing.
Great essay, thanks
Thank you Yezen
"Things are only bad when white people do them." That sums up ALL this crap. The "white savior" trope, the "black best friend" trope, and every other crybaby narrative from all wannabe-woke racism police who believe that white people are the default villains of Planet Earth. Anytime white people are involved in ANYTHING, you fragile victim-seekers crawl out from under your rocks to whine about something. We breath oxygen, you b:tch about it. If you hate us so much, then stop immigrating to all our countries and systematically destroying them. And make your own shows and movies with all the "people of color" you want. Leave us the f*ck alone and focus on yourselves for a change.
grThis was refreshingly substantive and insightful, thank you. Your channel is completely underrated. As one of the scores of angry GOT fans that is still resentful at how badly D & D fucked up her story arc, I have been resistant to most of the "it was there all along" B.S. by lesser critics. But you really make some valid points here. Great value add!
OMG you had me at "class consciousness." Just subbed in the first two minutes of running into this video. Broey Deschanel did a really substantive essay about Daenerys as a tragic idealist which is worth watching as well, but in your introduction when you said you were even going to include the *spiritual* critique I knew this was going to have the depth I've been seeking on this topic. How you crammed all that into 13 mins is amazing.
Personally I believe that the wins the characters achieved for episode 6.9-8.3 were just the narrative the writers chose to make the tragic ending hit harder.
Would’ve preferred there being something different than ‘the night king’ I still enjoyed the use in the show. I don’t thing Theon would’ve been satisfying either. Arya was the right choice, and in the original outline, it is Jon, bran and Arya who travel north to defeat the great other. (Maybe not Jon, but Arya is definitely with bran) So when adding the whole god of death and assassin training that Arya goes through, it gives her a very satisfying role in the story. Plot armor is silly in 803, sure.
There is no great other in the original outline.
@@yezenirl6331 aye, and in the original outline Cat flees to wall with Arya and Bran. Misremembered.
Pity ? Lmao NO
No need to overanalyze it. Most people saw her as a kick-*ss chick doing her thing. They tell us that when you watch reactions. Plus adding their modern day political views, they overlooked the earlier signs of her actual self. You could see the writing develop more to appease modern views as the seasons went on.
pity is what commoners tell themselves they can have when they can't be her
This video sucks
The outro theme is perfect.
She was truly tragic. She wanted to rule with love but nobody in westeros loved her no matter what she did. Then she lost everything and everyone and this drove her to "if you dont wanna love me then fear me" she acted upon her emotions. And after she died drogon burned the throne to say this throne is the root of all evil and this killed my mother
"Forgiving Game of Thrones" ... NO!
I think everything you said was accurate but it should be hamie
A lot of these so called "mediocre" and "predictable" fan theories took fans YEARS to come up with by re-reading and carefully analyzing the story. The fact that they were so popular and widely known after so many years of stewing in people's brains doesn't make them mediocre or predictable.
Yes it does.
@@mkultra2456 Right, because the nonsensical subversion we got was better? Subverting your expectations isn't inherently bad but if you subvert good ideas with bad ones, you've successfully failed.
@@krissuyx "because the nonsensical subversion we got was better?" I never said that. And LOL "successfully failed." You can't use those two words together.
@@mkultra2456 Sure you can. You can deliberately fail at something.
@@krissuyx Now that you mention it, there were rumours GoT's last couple season were sabotaged. It seems that shows and movies are purposefully ruined these days.
It was terrible to see the cast on a panel and see only Kit Harrington bothered to read the books. They came off as lazy, unintrested, joking away embarrassment for GRR Martin who was there. It showed no consideration for searching for character nuance or devellopment.
why then anakin is "fallen angel" ? why paul is messiah ? why leto 2 is god emperor ? Danny was fine till jealous impotentic men was too jealous of her
You have a lisp lol
"It's the fatal flaw of mortalkind. Take away their free will, and they call you a tyrant. Allow them to indulge it, and they become tyrants." - Raphael in BG3
Dany is infertile in the books
The throne being destroyed by dragonfire is something I predicted as a kid Bran becomming kid was not Martin confirmed bran becomming king was a plotpoint from him The throne getting molten in the show felt a little out of nowhere as Drogon should've killed jon I wonder after watching this video if the throne will be destroyed in the books.
It won’t. George has implied that the throne survives.
speaking of the burning of Shereen this is where I no longer called Stannis The mannis .No from that point on he is a villain screw the idea of being complicated , or he had his reasons you don't burn lil girls .
The fact that he’s a prince too. I said the same thing years ago.
Queen Dany is a product of her environment, her time, but where is the line
I LOVED it!!!🖤👍🏻
He didn’t underestimate Theon as a fighter, he wasn’t. He underestimated how much pain he could take. Damn
John 3:16For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life 🙂
Yes, but there is stuff like issues with Trinity and Paul that aren’t being discussed in the mainstream Christianity.
